This colorful regatta series was initiated by HIYC in 1968 to honor the club's "Adopted Scotsman," Thistle skipper John McDougall: a Harbor Islander who was instrumental in organizing and promoting sailing in Nashville. It was he who purchased the land on what would become Harbor Island. John constructed a concrete causeway from the mainland for the purposes of developing a residential community prior to the lake being filled. No doubt, he also dreamed of a permanent location for he and his sailing friends. We at HIYC owe a great debt to this man; because without Jo...hn and that fortuitous notion, HIYC would not be in existence.
John's namesake regatta is sponsored annually in the early fall. The McDougall dinghy two day regatta is for all one design and Portsmouth handicapped dinghies and was traditionally held amid bagpipe music and beautiful Scot costumes, with the past winners receiving a bottle of John McDougall's coveted "Oil of Joy" Scotch Whiskey, which John is holding in the photo above, as well as the McDougall Trophy Cairn. John McDougall passed from us in 1991 and the Cairn was retired in his memory.
The "new" McDougall was been scheduled for the 2nd and 3rd weekend of October, beginning in 1997 through 2015. The McDougall cruiser two day regatta was enjoyed for many years by HIYC cruisers; but decades ago, the cruiser regatta was discontinued. After a renewed interest, the cruisers resumed the regatta with a one day race on October 4th, 1997. In 1998 the race committee decided to return to the original design of the regatta with two full weekends of racing in October. In 2016, the race committee opted to move to a single-day "cruiser-only" format. The Cruiser regatta is a PHRF regatta with 4 fleets: Heavy A, Heavy B, Light, and C fleet (main and jib only) — (C fleet is a one day race). The 2017 Open will return to a 2-day format.
