Remembering the Worst Train Wreck in US History One Hundred Years Later: a day on the Richland Creek Greenway
Greenways for Nashville presents a day of interpretive walks through the wreck site.
On Saturday July 7, 2018, Greenways for Nashville will host Remembering the Worst Train Wreck in US History One Hundred Years Later: a day on the Richland Creek Greenway. This special event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The train wreck occurred on July 9, 1918, on a set of railroad tracks that runs through the Richland Creek Greenway. More than one hundred people lost their lives in the head on collision. It remains today the deadliest train wreck in U.S. history.
According to Betsy Thorpe, author o...f The Day the Whistles Cried: the great cornfield meet at Dutchman’s Curve, “There is something special about the Richland Creek Greenway.” Thorpe researched the area for more than five years before writing her book. “This is a storied place,” she said. “It played host to incidents in human history going back more than five hundred years. Long before European settlers arrived in Tennessee.”
Throughout the day, Betsy Thorpe will lead a series of interpretive walks through the Richland Creek Greenway. Accompanied by a different guest speaker on each walk, she will share what she knows about the train wreck and point out sites where certain events from the story took place.
Each guest speaker will address a different aspect of the greenway and its history.
Remembering the Worst Train Wreck in US History One Hundred Years Later: a day on the Richland Creek Greenway is open to the public. It is a free event.
More info on the times and topics of each walk and the names of the guest speakers will be released soon.
