Do you enjoy nature and are interested in local archaeology and prehistory? If so, be sure to join archaeologist Sarah Levithol Eckhardt with the Tennessee Division of Archaeology for a guided tour of the Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area, located just south of Lebanon, TN on Saturday, April 28 at 10am.

Sellars Farm is a fortified Mississippian period mound complex located along Spring Creek. Excavations carried out at the site indicate that it was first occupied around AD 1100 and was used until the mid-14th century. The site is perhaps best known for the discovery of four stone statues during the early 20th century, which were just featured in the «Ancestors» exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum. One of these statues, often referred to as Sandy, is the official Tennessee State Artifact and has been featured in numerous publications, including the cover of Time Magazine.

The two-hour-long tour will provide participants with information about the site, the prehistory of the region, and the role of Sellars Farm in the archaeological record of Middle Tennessee and the American Southeast. The tour will traverse approximately one mile of fairly flat terrain with some muddy areas along Spring Creek. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

The tour is limited to 25 participants on a first-come-first-serve basis. The cost is $10 per person and kids under 12 are free. To reserve your spot, please click on the link in the Tickets box.

Participants should plan to meet in the Sellars Farm parking lot off Poplar Hill Road by 9:45 am. The lot is located just west of the junction of Poplar Hill Road and Spring Creek. In the event of inclement or threatening weather, all participants will be contacted and notified of alternative arrangements.
