After four years of negotiations, on November 30th, 2016, the Colombian Congress ratified the peace accord between the Colombian state and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The international community heralded this agreement as a momentous achievement. However, since ratification, this milestone in Colombian history has been continuously and categorically threatened and undermined by the ongoing repression and assassination of social leaders. Just between January and August of 2017, over 101 social leaders were murdered in Colombia, and threats and assassinations have continued at an alarming rate. In response, organizations and communities throughout Colombia have launched a series of protests calling for the immediate, full implementation of the peace accord with the FARC guerrilla group and for more protections for social activists.
Join us to learn more about the current situation in Colombia and participate in a solidarity vigil to respect the calls of activists throughout Colombia.
